A little about “Natural Stone”
|
According
to the dictionary we receive the following definitions.
STONE: concreted earthy or mineral matter; rock.
And ROCK; a relatively hard formed mass of mineral or
petrified matter; stone. It all makes stone and rock sound a bit confusing, doesn’t
it?
Well,
what about Flagstone? In
reality, flagstone is just a general term for any kind of stone
that has been split into a flat slab.
Sometimes flagstone is confused with a particular type of
stone, such as sandstone, but in fact incorporates hundreds of
kinds of stone. Sedimentary
rock, which can break at natural clefs is most conducive as
flagstone. As far
as common usage; flagstone is often found in patios, driveways,
backyard stepping stone and for pool decks.
Flagstone is most commonly used horizontally (paving),
but can be used vertically (on wall type surfaces).
Natural and “snapped” ledger stone is usually
quarried from the same area but is thicker.
It breaks out in natural blocks or must be “snapped”
by a very expensive and sophisticated machine to be useable.
Ledge stone is used in building or veneering all types of
vertical surfaces. For
example, ledger may be used for a fireplace wall, partition
walls, or decorative veneer to the inside or outside of homes or
other buildings. More
recently natural stone thin veneer has become a very popular
alternative to both full bed depth natural stone and artificial
stone thin veneers. Stone direct is a high quality
fabricator of natural stone thin veneer. For many reasons
it is an alternative that needs serious consideration in many
vertical surface projects. Natural
stone is used both commercially and residentially.
Keep in mind that it is the artistic talent and ability
of the stone mason that will actually determine the final
appearance and everlasting quality of your stone project.
Many natural stone yards and building supply companies
have built “showrooms” or “dreamyards” to help consumers and
contractors alike visualize the versatility of natural stone.
Visiting our showrooms
in this website and viewing some of the completed
jobs is also a great way to visualize some of your possibilities
with our stone.
